AI Safety Research Task Force on Artificial Intelligence, in a hearing titlded " Equitable Algorithms: Axamining Ways to Reduce AI Bias in Financial Services.

As I read the paper I found myself wanting to give commentary on it, and LW seems like as good a place as any to do that. What follows are my thoughts taken section-by-section. This seems like a good time to confess that I'm interested in safety via debate because I Title: AI safety via debate Authors: Geoffrey Irving , Paul Christiano , Dario Amodei (Submitted on 2 May 2018 ( v1 ), last revised 22 Oct 2018 (this version, v2)) AI safety via debate Geoffrey Irving, Paul Christiano, Dario Amodei Abstract. Geoffrey Irving et al. at OpenAI have a paper out on AI safety via debate; the basic idea is that you can model debates as a two-player game (and thus apply standard insights about how to play such games well) and one can hope that debates asymmetrically favor the party who's arguing for a true position over a false position. If so, then we can use debates between AI advisors for alignment

I think I need to know more about computational complexity (to appreciate the debate hierarchy analogy) and about machine learning in general: I wanted to understand the Paul/OpenAI approach better. “Supervising strong learners by amplifying weak experts” As such I thought it would be interesting to look at one of their papers.

This post points out that we have an existing system that has been heavily optimized for this already: evidence law, which governs how court cases are run. Artificial intelligence (AI), or machine intelligence, has been defined as “intelligence demonstrated by machines, in contrast to the natural intelligence displayed by humans” and “…any device that perceives its environment and takes actions that maximize its chance of successfully achieving its goals.” 1 The goal of long-term artificial intelligence (AI) safety is to ensure that advanced AI systems are reliably aligned with human values — that they reliably do things that people want them to do.

Want To Make AI Agents Safe For Humans? Let Them Debate. Artificial General Intelligence seems to be coming sooner rather than later. “AI safety via debate” I finished reading the paper (2019-01-04, 2019-01-05). I think I need to know more about computational complexity (to appreciate the debate hierarchy analogy) and about machine learning in general: I wanted to understand the Paul/OpenAI approach better. “Supervising strong learners by amplifying weak experts” Does AI have a problem or are there challenges to overcome?
